A well-known Macclesfield business name has been rescued from oblivion and local jobs have been saved by the timely intervention of Manchester Chartered Accountants and Insolvency Practitioners Clarke Bell.
Originally founded as general engineers in 1945, E.R. Burgess Ltd. diversified and built up a specialist business manufacturing bakeware for trade and industry in Britain and abroad, becoming the UK's only manufacturer of the US seamlock muffin tray.
Unfortunately, the failure of a major customer left a massive bad debt, which created a financial crisis late last year. On Clarke Bell's advice, the company was placed into administrative receivership, thus saving eight local jobs, while its business and assets were put up for sale. The eventual purchasers Jonathon and Sally Ann Sutton re-established the company name as ER. Burgess (Macclesfield) Ltd.
Managing Director Jonathon Sutton is the grandson of the late founder Eric Burgess. "The company name was in danger of disappearing altogether after 55 years," he said.
"Thanks to Clarke Bell, we have been able to secure the jobs of eight people, and by redeveloping the customer base we're busy again with a good order book."
